Casio Hybrid GPS Tracks both in and outdoors

Casio are launching a new hybrid GPS camera that aims to track where you are when you capture photos both in and outdoors. It achieves this by using a mixture of GPS data and accelerometer data. The theory behind the Hybrid GPS system is that most cameras, if not all, spend most of their time out of sight of a GPS lock and thus, you can’t really get a fix most of the time. By getting a fix with the GPS unit the camera system can then measure with accelerometer movement where the camera is moving and what direction giving a rough estimate to where it is, even when you walk around your home or leave it in the back of the car.

Accelerometers have been found in cameras for a few years now to detect orientation of the camera, ie, is it landscape or portrait and they rotate images accordingly. Some even detect if the camera is the right way up and can then spot the sky more easily and adjust settings accordingly.

By mixing the two together the camera will be capable of giving a fairly good geo-targeted guess when it stamps the image file with co-ordinates.

From what the picture below shows it seems like a mapping system is also included on the camera that uses push-pins to mark where your photos were taken allowing you to flick through them by location.

GPS isn’t used that much in cameras yet and a lot of cameras rely on external GPS systems that link with your camera. Part of the reason is probably battery life. By using a hybrid system Casio could just turn the camera’s GPS on from time to time to get an exact location and then carry on with the inertia from the accelerometers to fill in the gaps.

It’s certainly going to be an interesting year for cameras again just like 2009 was. Add in digital compasses and the wireless features of some cameras then you’ll know which direction the photo was taken and be able to upload to Flickr. Maybe Google will allow data to be augmented in to their 3D building maker software too.

Casio Digital Cameras " Improving All the Time "

Casio is probably not the first name that will come into your mind upon the mention of digital cameras. However, with its continuously improving digital camera technology, Casio is making its way to the top, joining the ranks of old-timers like Nikon and Canon. Casio also have become a very popular choice among photography enthusiasts because of its groundbreaking features such as high speed burst digital photos and high definition movies.

Exilim Zoom is one of the most popular lines from this brand. This series, which showcases digital cameras with large LCD displays, powerful zooming capabilities, extended battery life, and 2-in-1 Movie and Snapshot is the prevalent choice among many digital camera users.

The Casio EX-H10 from this series has a commanding 10x optical zoom, ultra-wide angle 24mm lens, and the Dynamic Photo functionality that enables users to capture up to 1,000 shots on a single battery charge. Aside from the powerful zooming feature, this camera is equipped with a CCD-shift image stabilization mechanism that allows crisp images even at high zoom factors.

This is something that some brands with long zooms do not have. While other brands may also have excellent zooming features, they do not have image stabilization for zoomed shots. What would you do with a zoomed shot if you cannot decipher what the subject is because it is too blurry or out of focus?

Moreover, Casio improved the circuitry and operational controls of its cameras to reduce energy consumption and extend the life of the battery. This allows users to use the camera for about 11 consecutive hours and take as many as 1,000 photo shots in a single full charge of the battery. Needless to say, this is the perfect camera companion for your travels.

Of course, Casio understands the fact that many camera users are always on the go, making it necessary for them to have digital cameras that can fit their pockets. This paved the way to the birth of Exilim Card Series in 2002. With its ultra-thin, stylish designs, photography aficionados enjoy the supreme functionality of Casio cameras in a pocketsize form.

One of the best-sellers from this group is the Casio EX-S10, which has the compelling features of Casio cameras such as high pixel count of 10 megapixels, long zoom, large 2.7-inch LCD screen, YouTube capture mode, iTunes compatible video format, and so on. But most importantly, all of these fit in a stylish slim housing that comes in a wide variety of colors like silver, red, black and blue.

For the advanced users, Casio came up with the High Speed Exilim series, which has fast burst shooting capability, high-speed movie recording and other innovative features. The EX-F1 is one of the most power-packed cameras from this series. It has the world's fastest burst shooting capability with a full resolution of 60 fps for clear and crisp shots. It also comes with 6.0 million effective pixels and a 12x optical zoom.

Taking care of your Casio digital camera is of utmost importance if you want to make them last a long time with you. Should you detect any malfunction or breakdown, bring immediately to a reliable Casio digital camera repair business for inspection.

Casio is truly one of the names to trust when it comes to digital cameras. With its line of superb cameras with excellent features and designs, it is not a surprise that it has become one of the top-selling brands in the market today.

Ricoh’s GXR Modular Camera System Is Cool, But Practical…I Think Not

Ricoh, who rock some seriously solid cameras, announced a new and novel approach to the digital camera space yesterday, the GXR.  Unlike traditional DSLRs, the GXR, which is more digital point and shoot, has a removable lens/sensor system.  For the consumer, that means you can upgrade not only the optics of the camera, but its ability to capture high rez photos without buying a whole new back or system.

Take for instance the two lens/sensors to be launched.  The 24-72mm-equivalent f2.5-4.4 lens includes a 10 megapixel sensor that can capture VGA movies, while the second module, a 50mm-equivalent f2.5 macro lens, can capture 12.3 megapixel photos and 720p video (and more).

But there are drawbacks.  The camera ain’t cheap – $549 for just the body – and each lens/sensor costs over $400 as of right now.  So without trying to wax too philosophical, the debate really lies within what kind of consumer you are.  Would you prefer to have a set of lenses that you can use on a wide variety of cameras, or a camera that has a wide array of lenses that can only be used with one camera?

Update: Ricoh might build a printer module for the GXR.

Casio’s EX-G1 Camera on Review

Today, Casio trotted out what they’re calling the thinnest ruggedized digital camera, the EX-G1.  And at .78-inches I might have to agree, although I didn’t really do any comparison, but it does sound thin for being shock-resistant, freezeproof, dustproof and waterproof.  And as you’ve probably noticed the styling bites off of their G-Shock line of phones.

Spec wise were talking a 12.1 megapixel sensor, 848×480 movide mode, microSD card slot, 3x optical zoom, 2.5-inch LCD and Advanced Dynamic Photo function.  There’s a bit more details on just how rugged the EX-G1 is after the ‘leap’.

You can expect the EX-G1 to arrive sometime December for $299.99 – it will also come in black.

Joby Gorillapod SLR Digital Camera Tripod Review

Joby GorillaPod’s have been a welcome new species over the last several years in the digital camera arena.  The SLR version is a giant GorillaPod capable of handling the weight of these larger cameras while still allowing for the expressive stylings Joby is known for.

What I’ll mention right away is that without the “sold separately” ballhead attachment, the SLR Gorillapod just ain’t that cool.

Not a great way to start a review, but the fact is that the ballhead attachment is where all the action’s at. Without it, the Gorillapod is extremely limited in what it can do and it seems worthless to me that these products aren’t coupled together.

That’s not so say that the absence of the ballhead makes the SLR Gorillapod totally undesirable.  It can still do stuff, but the upper most joints in the legs prevent you from achieving more angular and creative shots.

The thing is, is that Joby’s website lists the standard version for $40 as well as the ballhead sold separately for $40.  That’s $80 for what professional photographers would call a secondary tri-pod.  Can I get an emoticon?

It held up fine using a standard SLR (Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ30) in terms of being able to handle the weight while grasping objects9seen above), it was really precarious when attached to my buddy’s Canon EOS-1D Mark II with a Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM Autofocus Lens (seen in 1st pic) and couldn’t really hold it safely.

This leads me to another point.  Joby actually has a more expensive SLR Gorillapod designed for the heaviest of SLR’s.  Why not just have one and spare us the trouble if we have multiple camera’s or plan to buy a heavier one down the line?

Other than that, it takes a while to screw on and off and it looks like a gymnast performing a routine on that stationary horse thing.  It’s a bit tedious and unlike the regular (small digital camera) Gorillapod, it doesn’t have a quick release tab allowing for faster attaching and removal.

The movable balls that give the tri-pod it’s unique shape changing abilities are stiff and rugged and I don’t question the quality of construction one bit.  It is bigger than you’d expect so making room for it needs to be taken into account.

Keeping this review short and simple, we know what it does, but the regular SLR Gorillapod by Joby just isn’t strong enough to stand on its own.  The missing ballhead needs to be included and the price needs to drop in order for this product to be taken seriously.  Seriously.

Sony Alpha DSLR-A450 review

Sony expands its Alpha line of DSLR cameras with the DSLR-A450, which caters to digicam enthusiasts who are ready to take their photography passions to the next level.

The A450 has a 14.2-megapixel sensor with BIONZ processor, which promises to deliver highly-detailed images with low noise levels.  ISO range reaches up to 12800, ideal for perfect low-light images even without flash.  It also has a 2.7-inch LCD screen where users can preview the images before capturing them, while the optical viewfinder has a field of view of up to 95%, making framing and composition a breeze.

Creative options are also available with its Auto HDR mode.  It can vividly display both light and dark details in a single frame, while its High Dynamic Range mode enables users to automatically merge two successive images shot at different exposures without the help of a PC image editor.  Other features include an anti-shake corrector, Memory Stick and SD card slots, and a battery life of up to 1,050 shots between charges.

The Sony DSLR-A450 digital SLR camera is expected to become available on February 2010.

Samsung NX10 made official -- APS-C sensor and AMOLED screen crammed into hybrid DSLR body

Samsung has just announced its NX10 "hybrid DSLR," which aims to give you all the uncompromising image quality of a full digital SLR within a somewhat more pocketable body. A 14.6 megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor is a good start on that road, while "fast and decisive" contrast AF and a snazzy 3-inch AMOLED display keep the momentum going. There's 720p H.264-encoded video recording as well, but naturally you do have to make some tradeoffs for the reduced size. The mirror box is gone -- leaving you with only an electronic viewfinder -- and the brand new NX lens mounting system means you'll have to purchase your favorite lenses all over again. We'll wait and see whether the NX10 shows any appreciable advantages (such as price!) over the slightly smaller Micro Four Thirds shooters out there, but with a spring 2010 release date and a CES appearance on the cards, that wait shouldn't be too long. Go past the break for the full PR and spec sheet.
