Tracking noise and air quality with Sensaris

Living in big cities brings comfort of modern life and chance to use all the latest advancements of technology. Unfortunately, it comes at the price of being surrounded by noise and air pollution on daily basis. Even though most of the cities have developed tracking and reporting systems for alerting citizens of pollution levels, there is a problem with accuracy of these data. If you happen to live close to busy highway or manufacturing plant, level of noise and air pollution will be much higher then reported average data for whole city. That is where new Sensaris Wearable Sensor comes into a rescue.

The folks at Sensaris seem to think they can change that with this new GPS-equipped wearable sensor which is able to monitor both air quality and noise pollution in your neighborhood in real-time.With this gadget you can pinpoint “bad” spots in the city and make it available to the public This mobile way of monitoring and reporting conditions is likely to empower citizens of these neighborhoods and key decision makers to take action.

According to Sensaris,

“The miniature wrist worn solution provided by Sensaris leverages geolocation chips (GPS or Galileo in the future) wearable devices and mobile technologies. Such sensors transform mobile phones into measurement instruments using Bluetooth communication”.

“Whether used by pedestrians or cyclists, the sensors provide noise and ozone levels in real time over the Internet and web based visualization (mashups). Our Senspod technology forms the basis for innovative citizen centric services. We look forward to helping other cities use it for their own community action and urban life quality improvement plans.”

We think this is potentially a wonderful tool that will empower citizens to become involved and take back some control over their quality of life. Hopefully it will force cities to pay more attention to air and noise pollution problems in less affluent neighborhoods and take steps to improve conditions. “

For now it is apparently going to be deployed only in Paris, which Sensaris hopes will just be the first of many cities to hop on board.
